✧ There was a dispute between two clans of the Ansar, from Banu Amr b. Awf, until they threw stones at each other. The news reached the Prophet ﷺ while Bilal had already called the adhan for Zuhr prayer. The Prophet ﷺ went to reconcile between them, and was delayed. Bilal came to Abu Bakr and said, “Will you lead the prayer so I may announce the iqamah?” He said, “Yes.” Bilal announced the iqamah and Abu Bakr stepped forward. Then the Prophet ﷺ came, making his way through the rows until he stood behind Abu Bakr. The people began to clap, but Abu Bakr would not turn around during his prayer. When they did it excessively, he turned around and saw the Messenger of God ﷺ. He stepped back walking backwards, so the Prophet ﷺ pushed him forward and prayed. When he finished the prayer, he turned to Abu Bakr and said, “What prevented you from remaining in front when I ordered you?” He said, “It is not for God to see the son of Abu Quhafah lead the Messenger of God ﷺ in prayer.” Then he turned to the people and said, “O people, what is the matter with you that when something happens to you during your prayer, you turn to clapping? Clapping is only for women, and glorification (tasbih) is for men.”
