حَدَّثَنَا أَسْلَمُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبَانَ ثنا مُبَشِّرُ بْنُ مُكَسِّرٍ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ
جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَعَرَضَتْ عَلَيْهِ نَفْسَهَا فَسَكَتَ فَقَامَتْ حَتَّى رَثَيْنَا لَهَا مِنْ طُولِ الْقِيَامِ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ زَوِّجْنِيهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ «مَا تُصْدِقُهَا؟» قَالَ هَذِهِ الشَّمْلَةَ الَّتِي عَلَيَّ لَيْسَ عِنْدِي غَيْرُهَا قَدْ عَقَدَهَا عَلَى صَدْرِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ «أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ عَرَّسْتَ أَعِنْدَكَ غَيْرُهَا؟» قَالَ لَا وَاللهِ قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ» فَذَهَبَ فَمَكَثَ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ مَا وَجَدْتُ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَقَالَ «مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ؟» قَالَ آيَةُ كَذَا وَآيَةُ كَذَا قَالَ فَقَالَ «فَقَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَ عَلَى مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

✧ A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and offered herself to him. He remained silent and did not respond, so she stood there for a long time until we pitied her because of how long she had been standing. Then a man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, marry her to me." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you have anything to give as mahr (dowry)?" The man replied, "I have nothing except my waistbelt (shamlah), which I am wearing." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you agree to marry her with what you have from the Quran?" The man said, "Yes, by Allah." The Prophet ﷺ then told him, "Go and search even if it is just an iron ring." So the man went and stayed for as long as Allah willed. Then he returned and said, "I could not find anything, not even an iron ring." The Prophet ﷺ then asked him, "What do you have from the Quran?" The man mentioned certain verses. The Prophet ﷺ then said, "I have married you to her based on what you have from the Quran."
