حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الصَّائِغُ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الشَّافِعِيُّ ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ
جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ جِئْتُ أَهَبُ لَكَ نَفْسِي فَقَامَتْ طَوِيلًا لَا يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَصَعَّدَ فِيهَا النَّظَرَ وَصَوَّبَهُ فَلَمَّا طَالَ مُقَامُهَا تَنَحَّتْ وَجَلَسَتْ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ تُصْدِقُهَا إِيَّاهُ؟» قَالَ لَا وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَانْظُرْ» فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لَا وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَالْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ» فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لَا وَاللهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ وَلَا خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ قَالَ وَعَلَيْهِ إِزَارٌ مَا عَلَيْهِ رِدَاءٌ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِزَارِي قَالَ إِنَّ إِزَارَكَ إِنْ لَبِسْتَهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ وَإِنْ لَبِسَتْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ فَتَنَحَّى الرَّجُلُ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَآهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مُوَلِّيًا فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَدُعِيَ فَقَالَ «مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ؟» قَالَ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا لِسُوَرٍ عَدَّدَهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «اذْهَبْ فَقَدْ مَلَّكْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

✧ A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I have come to give myself to you.” She stood for a long time while the Prophet ﷺ did not look at her. He raised his gaze to her and lowered it. When her standing became prolonged, she withdrew and sat down. A man from the people stood up and said: “O Messenger of Allah, if you have no need of her, marry her to me.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do you have anything to give her as a dowry?” He said: “No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Go and look.” He went and then returned and said: “No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I found nothing.” He said: “Go and search, even for an iron ring.” He went and then returned and said: “No, by Allah, I found nothing, not even an iron ring.” He said, while he was wearing a lower garment and had no upper garment: “O Messenger of Allah, my lower garment.” He said: “If you wear your lower garment, she will have nothing of it, and if she wears it, you will have nothing of it.” The man withdrew, then stood up. The Prophet ﷺ saw him turning away, so he ordered that he be called. He said: “What do you have of the Quran?” He said: “Surah so-and-so and Surah so-and-so,” for surahs he counted. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Go, for I have given her to you in marriage for what you have of the Quran.”
