حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ رِشْدِينَ الْمِصْرِيُّ ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ أَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو حَازِمٍ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ
غَزَوْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا لَقِينَا الْمُشْرِكِينَ قَاتَلْنَاهُمْ حَتَّى تَفَرَّقْنَا وإِيَّاهُمْ عِنْدَ الْمَسَاءِ وَكِلَا الْفَرِيقَيْنِ قَدْ أَعْيَى وَتَعِبَ وَرَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ لَمْ يَمَلَّ وَلَمْ يَعْيَ لَمْ يَتْرُكْ شَاذَّةً وَلَا فَاذَّةً لِلْقَوْمِ إِلَّا قَتَلَهَا فَعَجِبَ النَّاسُ مِنْ صَبْرِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ فَلْيَنْظُرْ إِلَى هَذَا» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ وَاللهِ لَأَكُونَنَّ أَنَا صَاحِبَهُ حَتَّى أَنْظُرَ إِلَى مَا يَصِيرُ فَجُرِحَ فَجَزِعَ مِنَ الْمَوْتِ فَأَخَذَ سَيْفَهُ فَوَضَعَهُ عَلَى كَبِدِهِ ثُمَّ اتَّكَأَ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى أَنْفَذَهُ مِنْ ظَهْرِهِ فَجَاءَ الرَّجُلُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَهُ بِذَلِكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَيَعْمَلُ بِطَاعَةِ اللهِ ﷻ فِيمَا يَبْدُو لِلنَّاسِ وَإِنَّهُ لَمَكْتُوبٌ عِنْدَ اللهِ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ وَإِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَيَعْمَلُ بِمَعاصِي اللهِ فِيمَا يَبْدُو لِلنَّاسِ وَإِنَّهُ لَمَكْتُوبٌ عِنْدَ اللهِ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ»

✧ We went on an expedition with the Messenger of God ﷺ. When we met the polytheists, we fought them until we separated from them at evening. Both parties were exhausted and tired. A man from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ did not tire or weary; he did not leave any isolated or separated one of the people except that he killed him. The people marveled at his endurance. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Whoever would like to look at a man from the people of Hell, let him look at this one." A man from the people said: "By God, I will be his companion until I see what becomes of him." He was wounded and became distressed at death. He took his sword, placed it on his liver, then leaned on it until it came out of his back. The man came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and informed him of that. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "A servant may perform deeds of obedience to God, exalted is He, as they appear to people, yet he is recorded with God among the people of Hell; and a servant may perform deeds of disobedience to God as they appear to people, yet he is recorded with God among the people of Paradise."
