حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عُثْمَانَ ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ ثنا أَبُو غَسَّانَ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ
أَنَّ امْرَأَةً عَرَضَتْ نَفْسَهَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا فَقَالَ «مَا عِنْدَكَ؟» قَالَ مَا عِنْدِي شَيْءٌ قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَالْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ» فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لَا وَاللهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا وَلَا خَاتَمَ حَدِيدٍ وَلَكِنْ هَذَا إِزَارِي لَهَا نِصْفُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا تَصْنَعُ بإِزَارِكَ إِنْ لَبِسْتَهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ وَإِنْ لَبِسَتْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ» فَجَلَسَ الرَّجُلُ حَتَّى طَالَ مَجْلِسُهُ فَرَآهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَدَعَاهُ أَوْ جِيءَ بِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ «مَاذَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ؟» قَالَ مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «قَدْ أَنْكَحْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

✧ A woman offered herself in marriage to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and a man from the people said: Marry her to me. He said: “What do you have?” He replied: I have nothing. He said: “Go and seek something, even an iron ring.” He went and then returned, saying: No, by God, I found nothing, not even an iron ring, but this is my lower garment, and she may have half of it. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “What would you do with your lower garment? If you wear it, she would have nothing from it, and if she wears it, you would have nothing from it.” The man sat until his sitting became long. The Messenger of God ﷺ saw him and called him, or he was brought to him, and said: “What do you have with you from the Qurʾān?” He said: I have Sūrah so-and-so and so-and-so. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “I have married her to you for what you have from the Qurʾān.”
