✧ Al-Qa'nabi narrated to us from Malik (h), and Bakr b. Sahl al-Dimyati narrated to us: 'Abd Allah b. Yusuf narrated to us: Malik informed us (h), and 'Ali b. al-Mubarak al-San'ani narrated to us: Isma'il b. Abi Uways narrated to us: Malik narrated to me from Abu Hazim from Sahl b. Sa'd that the Messenger of God ﷺ went to the Banu 'Amr b. 'Awf to reconcile between them. The time for prayer came, so the mu'adhdhin came to Abu Bakr ؓ and said: "Will you lead the people in prayer so that I may give the iqamah?" He said: "Yes." So Abu Bakr ؓ led the prayer. The Messenger of God ﷺ came while the people were in prayer. He made his way through until he stood in the row. The people clapped, and Abu Bakr did not turn around during his prayer. When the people clapped a lot, Abu Bakr turned and saw the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ gestured to him: "Stay in your place." Abu Bakr ؓ raised his hands and praised God ﷻ for what the Messenger of God ﷺ commanded him of that. Then he stepped back until he stood in the row, and the Prophet ﷺ came forward and led the prayer. When he finished, he said: "O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from staying in place when I commanded you?" He said: "It was not for the son of Abu Quhafah to pray before the Messenger of God ﷺ." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Why did I see you clapping a lot? Whoever is disturbed by something in his prayer should glorify God, for if he glorifies God, attention will be turned to him. Clapping is only for women."
