حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ لُوَيْنٌ ثنا عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ

أَنَّهُ كَانَ فِي مَجْلِسِ قَوْمِهِ وَهُوَ يُحَدِّثُهُمْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَبَعْضُهُمْ مُقْبِلٌ عَلَى بَعْضٍ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ فَغَضِبَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «انْظُرْ إِلَيْهِمْ أُحَدِّثُهُمْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَمَّا رَأَتْ عَيْنَايَ وَسَمِعَتْ أُذُنَايَ وَبَعْضُهُمْ مُقْبِلٌ عَلَى بَعْضٍ أَمَا وَاللهِ لَأَخْرُجَنَّ مِنْ بَيْنِ أَظْهُرِكُمْ ثُمَّ لَا أَرْجِعُ إِلَيْكُمْ أَبَدًا» قُلْتُ لَهُ أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُ؟ قَالَ «أَذْهَبُ فَأُجَاهِدُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» قُلْتُ مَا بِكَ جِهَادٌ وَمَا تَسْتَمْسِكُ عَلَى الْفَرَسِ وَمَا تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَضْرِبَ بِالسَّيْفِ وَمَا تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَطْعَنَ بِالرُّمْحِ فَقَالَ «يَا أَبَا حَازِمٍ أَذْهَبُ فَأَكُونُ فِي الصَّفِّ فَيَأْتِينِي بَيْنَهُمْ عَابِرٌ أَوْ حَجَرٌ فَيَرْزُقُنِي اللهُ الشَّهَادَةَ» قَالَ فَذَهَبَ لَعَمْرِي فَمَا رَجَعَ إِلَّا مَطْعُونًا

✧ He was in the gathering of his people, relating to them from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while some of them were facing one another, conversing. He became angry and said: “Look at them! I am relating to them from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what my eyes saw and my ears heard, while some of them are facing one another. By Allah, I will surely depart from among you and never return to you again.” I said to him: “Where will you go?” He said: “I will go and fight in the path of Allah.” I said: “You are not able to fight; you cannot keep steady on a horse, you cannot strike with a sword, and you cannot thrust with a spear.” He said: “O Abu Hazim, I will go and stand in the battle line, and a passerby or a stone will come to me among them, and Allah will grant me martyrdom.” He said: So he went, by my life, and he did not return except as one struck by a spear.
