✧ Al-Qa'nabi narrated to us from Malik; and Bakr b. Sahl al-Dimyati narrated to us, 'Abd Allah b. Yusuf narrated to us; Malik informed us from Abu Layla b. 'Abd Allah b. Sahl from Sahl b. Abi Hathmah that he informed him from men among the elders of his people that 'Abd Allah b. Sahl and Muhayyisah went out to Khaybar because of hardship that befell them. Muhayyisah came and was informed that 'Abd Allah b. Sahl had been killed and thrown into a well or a spring. He went to the Jews and said, 'By Allah, you killed him.' They said, 'By Allah, we did not kill him.' Then he returned until he came to his people and mentioned that to them. He, his brother Huwayyisah—who was older than him—and 'Abd al-Rahman b. Sahl came. Huwayyisah went to speak, as he was the one who had been at Khaybar, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Muhayyisah, 'Let the elder speak, the elder,' meaning age. So Huwayyisah spoke, then Muhayyisah spoke. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Either they pay the blood money for your companion, or they declare war.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to them about that, and they wrote back, 'By Allah, we did not kill him.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Huwayyisah, Muhayyisah, and 'Abd al-Rahman b. Sahl, 'Will you swear and thus be entitled to the blood of your companion?' They said, 'No.' He said, 'Then will the Jews swear for you?' They said, 'They are not Muslims.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid the blood money from his own resources and sent them one hundred she-camels, which were brought into the house. Sahl said, 'A red she-camel from them kicked me.'
