حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عُثْمَانَ ثنا نُعَيْمُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ ثنا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ وَحِبَّانُ بْنُ مُوسَى قَالُوا ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ شَقِيقِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ قَالَ
سَهْلُ بْنُ حُنَيْفٍ «يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّهِمُوا رَأْيَكُمْ فَإِنَّا وَاللهِ مَا أَخَذْنَا بِقَوَائِمِهِنَّ إِلَى أَمْرٍ يَقْطَعُنَا إِلَّا أَسْهَلَ بِنَا إِلَى أَمْرٍ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلَّا أَمْرَكُمْ هَذَا فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَزْدَادُ إِلَّا شِدَّةً ولَبْسًا فَلَوْ رَأَيْتُنِي يَوْمَ أَبِي جَنْدَلٍ وَلَوْ أَجِدُ أَعْوَانًا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَأَنْكَرْتُ»

✧ Sahl b. Hunayf: "O people, be suspicious of your own opinion, for by God, we never took hold of their legs for any matter that cut us off except that it led us smoothly to a matter we recognized, except this matter of yours, for it only increases in hardship and confusion. If only you had seen me on the day of Abu Jandal — had I found helpers against the Messenger of God ﷺ, I would have objected."
