al-Mu'jam al-Kabir (al-Tabarani) 5586

✧ Sahl b. Hunayf b. Wahib b. Hakim, also known as Uqaym b. Tha'laba b. Majda'a b. Al Harith b. 'Amr, known as Abu Thabit "Badr'i", died in Kufa, and Ali b. Abi Talib prayed upon him.

حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ غَنَّامٍ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيُّ ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ قَالَا ثنا أَبُو سُفْيَانَ الْحِمْيَرِيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ بْنِ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَعُودُ فُقَرَاءَ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَيَشْهَدُ جَنَائِزَهُمْ إِذَا مَاتُوا فَتُوُفِّيَتِ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعَوَالِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِذَا حَضَرَتْ فَآذِنُونِي» فَأَتَوْهُ لِيُئْذِنُوهُ فَوَجَدُوهُ نَائِمًا وَقَدْ ذَهَبَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَكَرِهُوا أَنْ يُوقِظُوهُ وتَخَوَّفُوا عَلَيْهِ ظُلْمَةَ اللَّيْلِ وهَوَامَّ الْأَرْضِ فَذَهَبُوا بِهَا فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ سَأَلَ عَنْهَا قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَتَيْنَاكَ لِنُؤْذِنَكَ فَوَجَدْنَاكَ نَائِمًا فَكَرِهْنَا أَنْ نُوقِظَكَ وتَخَوَّفْنَا عَلَيْكَ ظُلْمَةَ اللَّيْلِ وهَوَامَّ الْأَرْضِ فَذَهَبُوا فَمَشَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى قَبْرِهَا فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا وَكَبَّرَ أَرْبَعًا وَاللَّفْظُ لِحَدِيثِ عُثْمَانَ

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit the poor of the people of Madinah and attend their funerals when they died. A woman from the people of al-'Awali died, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When she is present, inform me." They came to inform him but found him sleeping, and part of the night had passed, so they disliked waking him and feared for him the darkness of the night and the creatures of the earth. They took her away. When morning came, he asked about her. They said: "O Messenger of Allah, we came to inform you but found you sleeping, so we disliked waking you and feared for you the darkness of the night and the creatures of the earth." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ walked to her grave and prayed over her, saying four takbirs. The wording is that of the hadith of 'Uthman.
