حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ الْمَكِّيُّ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا ثنا أَبُو أُمَيَّةَ الطَّائِفِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي جَدِّي عَنْ جَدِّهِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْعَاصِ أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ مَظْعُونٍ قَالَ

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ائْذَنْ لِي فِي الِاخْتِصَاءِ فَقَالَ لَهُ «يَا عُثْمَانُ إِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ أَبْدَلَنَا بِالرَّهْبَانِيَّةِ الْحَنَفِيَّةَ السَّمْحَةَ وَالتَّكْبِيرَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَرَفٍ فَإِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَّا فَاصْنَعْ كَمَا نَصْنَعُ»

Translation

✧ O Messenger of God, permit me to castrate myself. He said to him: 'O 'Uthman, God has replaced monasticism for us with the easy, tolerant Hanifiyyah and with saying "God is great" on every hill. If you are one of us, then do as we do.'
