حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ثنا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ سَالِمًا يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ ابْنِ لَبِيدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ قَالَ
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «هَذَا أَوَانُ ذَهَابِ الْعِلْمِ» قُلْتُ وَكَيْفَ وَفِينَا كِتَابُ اللهِ نُعَلِّمُهُ أَبْنَاءَنَا وَيُعَلِّمُهُ أَبْنَاؤُنَا أَبْنَاءَهُمْ؟ قَالَ «ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ ابْنَ لَبِيدٍ مَا كُنْتُ أَحْسِبُكَ إِلَّا مِنْ أَعْقِلِ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَلَيْسَ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى فِيهِمْ كِتَابُ اللهِ التَّوْرَاةُ وَالْإِنْجِيلُ وَلَمْ يَنْتَفِعُوا مِنْهُ بِشَيْءٍ؟»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “This is the time of the departure of knowledge.” I said: “How, while among us is the Book of Allah, which we teach to our sons, and our sons will teach it to their sons?” He said: “May your mother be bereaved of you, Ibn Labid! I did not think of you except as among the most intelligent of the people of Madinah. Do not the Jews and Christians have the Book of Allah, the Torah and the Gospel, yet they did not benefit from it in anything?”
