حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمُقْرِئُ ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ زِيَادِ بْنِ أَنْعَمَ عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ نُعَيْمٍ عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الصُّدَائِيِّ قَالَ
أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَبَايَعْتُهُ فَبَلَغَنِي أَنَّهُ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُرْسِلَ جَيْشًا إِلَى قَوْمِي فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ رُدَّ الْجَيْشَ فَأَنَا لَكَ بِإِسْلَامِهِمْ وطَاعَتِهِمْ قَالَ «افْعَلْ» فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِمْ فَأَتَى وَفْدٌ مِنْهُمُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بِإِسْلَامِهِمْ وطَاعَتِهِمْ فَقَالَ «يَا أَخَا صُدَاءَ إِنَّكَ لَمُطَاعٌ فِي قَوْمِكَ» قُلْتُ بَلْ هَدَاهُمُ اللهُ وَأَحْسَنَ إِلَيْهِمْ قَالَ «أَفَلَا أُؤَمِّرُكَ عَلَيْهِمْ؟» قُلْتُ بَلَى فَأَمَّرَنِي عَلَيْهِمْ فَكَتَبَ لِي بِذَلِكَ كِتَابًا وَسَأَلْتُهُ مِنْ صَدَقَاتِهِمْ فَفَعَلَ وَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي بَعْضِ أَسْفَارِهِ فَنَزَلَ مَنْزِلًا فَأَعْرَسْنَا مِنْ أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ فَلَزِمْتُهُ وَجَعَلَ أَصْحَابُهُ يَنْقَطِعُونَ حَتَّى لَمْ يَبْقَ مَعَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ غَيْرِي فَلَمَّا تَحَيَّنَ الصُّبْحُ أَمَرَنِي فَأَذَّنْتُ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي «يَا أَخَا صُدَاءَ مَعَكَ مَاءٌ؟» قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَلِيلٌ لَا يَكْفِيكَ قَالَ «صُبَّهُ فِي الْإِنَاءِ ثُمَّ ائْتِنِي بِهِ» فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَأَدْخَلَ يَدَهُ فِيهِ فَرَأَيْتُ بَيْنَ كُلِّ إِصْبَعَيْنِ مِنْ أَصَابِعِهِ عَيْنًا تَفُورُ قَالَ يَا أَخَا صُدَاءَ لَوْلَا أَنِّي أَسْتَحْيِي مِنْ رَبِّي لسَقِيَنا وَاسْتَقَيْنَا نَادِ فِي النَّاسِ مَنْ كَانَ يُرِيدُ الْوُضُوءَ قَالَ فَاغْتَرَفَ مَنِ اغْتَرَفَ وَجَاءَ بِلَالٌ لِيُقِيمَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «إِنَّ أَخَا صُدَاءَ أَذَّنَ وَمَنْ أَذَّنَ فَهُوَ يُقِيمُ» فَلَمَّا صَلَّى الْفَجْرَ أَتَى أَهْلُ الْمَنْزِلِ يَشْكُونَ عَامِلَهُمْ وَيَقُولُونَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ حَدِّثْنَا بِمَا كَانَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ قَوْمِنَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ فَقَالَ «لَا خَيْرَ فِي الْإِمَارَةِ لِرَجُلٍ مُؤْمِنٍ» فَوَقَعَتْ فِي نَفْسِي وَأَتَاهُ سَائِلٌ فَسَأَلَهُ فَقَالَ «مَنْ سَأَلَ النَّاسَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى فَصُدَاعٌ فِي الرَّأْسِ ودَاءٌ فِي الْبَطْنِ» قَالَ فَأَعْطِنِي مِنَ الصَّدَقَاتِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ لَمْ يَرْضَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ بِحُكْمِ نَبِيٍّ وَلَا غَيْرِهِ حَتَّى جَعَلَهَا ثَمَانِيَةَ أَجْزَاءَ فَإِنْ كُنْتَ مِنْهُمْ أَعْطَيْتُكَ حَقَّكَ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْتُ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اقْبَلْ إِمَارَتَكَ فَلَا حَاجَةَ لِي فِيهَا قَالَ «وَلِمَ؟» قُلْتُ سَمِعْتُكَ تَقُولُ «لَا خَيْرَ فِي الْإِمَارَةِ لِرَجُلٍ مُؤْمِنٍ» وَقَدْ آمَنْتُ وسَمِعْتُكَ تَقُولُ «مَنْ سَأَلَ النَّاسَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى فَصُدَاعٌ فِي الرَّأْسِ ودَاءٌ فِي الْبَطْنِ» فَقَدْ سَأَلْتُكَ وَأَنَا غَنِيٌّ قَالَ «هُوَ ذَاكَ فَإِنْ شِئْتَ فَخُذْ وَإِنْ شِئْتَ فَدَعْ» قُلْتُ بَلْ أَدَعُ قَالَ «فَدُلَّنِي عَلَى رَجُلٍ أُوَلِّيهِ» فَدَلَلْتُهُ عَلَى رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْوَفْدِ فَوَلَّاهُ

✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ and pledged allegiance to him. It reached me that he intended to send an army to my people. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, turn back the army, for I will guarantee their submission and obedience to you." He said: "Do it." So he wrote to them. A delegation from them came to the Prophet ﷺ with their submission and obedience. He said: "O brother of Suda', you are indeed obeyed among your people." I said: "Rather Allah guided them and was good to them." He said: "Should I appoint you as commander over them?" I said: "Yes." So he appointed me over them and wrote a document for me to that effect. I asked him for some of their sadaqat, and he did so. The Prophet ﷺ was then on one of his journeys. He stopped at a place, and we camped at the beginning of the night. I stayed close to him, and his companions kept falling behind until no man among them remained with him except me. When dawn approached, he ordered me, and I gave the call to prayer. Then he said to me: "O brother of Suda', do you have water?" I said: "Yes, a little, not enough for you." He said: "Pour it into the vessel, then bring it to me." I brought it to him, and he put his hand into it. I saw between every two of his fingers a spring gushing forth. He said: "O brother of Suda', were it not that I feel shy before my Lord, we would have drunk and given drink. Call out to the people: whoever wants to perform ablution." So those who wanted scooped water. Bilal came to give the iqama, and the Prophet ﷺ said: "The brother of Suda' gave the adhan, and whoever gives the adhan should give the iqama." When he prayed the dawn prayer, the people of the place came complaining about their governor and saying: "O Messenger of Allah, tell us about what was between us and our people in the Jahiliyya." He turned to his companions, and I was among them, and said: "There is no good in leadership for a believing man." That fell into my heart. A beggar came to him and asked him. He said: "Whoever asks people while having enough, it is a headache in the head and a disease in the belly." The man said: "Give me from the sadaqat." He said: "Allah did not approve in the sadaqat the judgment of a prophet or anyone else until He made them eight portions. If you are one of those, I will give you your right." When morning came, I said: "O Messenger of Allah, take back your appointment, for I have no need of it." He said: "Why?" I said: "I heard you say: 'There is no good in leadership for a believing man,' and I have believed. And I heard you say: 'Whoever asks people while having enough, it is a headache in the head and a disease in the belly,' and I asked you while I am wealthy." He said: "It is that. If you wish, take it, and if you wish, leave it." I said: "Rather I leave it." He said: "Guide me to a man I can appoint." I guided him to a man from the delegation, and he appointed him.
