✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at 'Usfan when the time for prayer—the Zuhr prayer—arrived, and the polytheists' cavalry was led by Khalid b. al-Walid. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led his companions in Zuhr prayer. The polytheists said: "They have a prayer after this one that is dearer to them than their children, their wealth, and their own selves"—meaning the 'Asr prayer. Jibril ﷺ descended upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ between Zuhr and 'Asr and informed him, and this verse was revealed: {And when you are among them and lead them in prayer...} to the end. "When the prayer was due, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arranged his companions in two rows, carrying their weapons, with the enemy in front of the Prophet ﷺ. They all said the takbir and all bowed. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrated, and the row nearest to him prostrated, while the others remained standing, guarding them. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished, he stood for the second rak'ah, and the others prostrated. Then these moved forward to the position of those, and those moved back to the position of these. He led them in the other rak'ah, and they all bowed. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrated, and the row nearest to him prostrated, while the others remained standing, guarding them. When they finished, these prostrated. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concluded with the salam." Abu 'Ayyash said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed this prayer twice: once at 'Usfan and once in the land of Banu Sulaym."
