حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ دُحَيْمٍ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ ثنا أَبِي ثنا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ شُبَيْلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَمْرٍو الشَّيْبَانِيِّ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ قَالَ

كُنَّا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ نَتَكَلَّمُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ يُكَلِّمُ أَحَدُنَا صَاحِبَهُ فِي الْحَاجَةِ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهُ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ {حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ} فَأُمِرْنَا حِينَئِذٍ بِالسُّكُوتِ

✧ In the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ, we used to speak during the prayer; one of us would speak to his companion about a need between him and him until it was revealed: {Guard strictly the prayers, and the middle prayer, and stand before God devoutly obedient}. Then we were commanded at that point to be silent.
