✧ We went on a military campaign with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and with us were some Bedouins who would go ahead of us. A Bedouin went ahead of his companions, filled the watering trough, placed stones around it, and laid a leather mat over it until his companions arrived. An Ansari man came to the Bedouin and let loose the halter of his she-camel so she could drink, but the Bedouin refused to let him do so. So the Ansari pulled out a stone, and the water drained away. The Bedouin had a piece of wood, and he struck the Ansari’s head with it, wounding him. The Ansari went to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy, the head of the hypocrites, and told him—and the Bedouin was one of his companions. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy became angry and said: {Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of God until they disperse from around him}, meaning the Bedouins, for they used to attend the Messenger of God ﷺ at meal times. ʿAbd Allāh said to his companions: When they disperse from Muhammad, bring food to Muhammad so that he and those with him may eat. Then he said to his companions: When you return to Madinah, the more honored among you will expel the more lowly. Zayd said: I was riding behind my uncle ؓ. He said: I heard ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy—and we were his maternal uncles—so I informed my uncle, who went and told the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ sent for him, and he swore and denied it. The Messenger of God ﷺ believed him and disbelieved me. My uncle came to me and said: You intended nothing but that the Messenger of God ﷺ should hate you and the Muslims disbelieve you. Then there fell upon me such distress as has never fallen upon anyone. While I was walking with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a journey, my head was drooping from distress, and suddenly the Messenger of God ﷺ came to me, tweaked my ear, and smiled in my face. Nothing would have pleased me more than to have in return for that the eternal life of this world. Then Abu Bakr caught up with me and said: What did the Messenger of God ﷺ say to you? I said: He said nothing to me except that he tweaked my ear and smiled in my face. He said: Rejoice. Then ʿUmar caught up with me, and I said to him something similar to what I had said to Abu Bakr. When morning came, the Messenger of God ﷺ recited Surah al-Munafiqun.
