حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ ثنا أَبِي ثنا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ قَالَ
سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أُبَيٍّ ابْنِ سَلُولَ يَقُولُ لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ وَأَتَاهُ ابْنُ أُبِيٍّ فَحَلَفَ لَهُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَقُلْ ذَلِكَ وَأَتَانِي أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَلَامُونِي فَأَتَيْتُ مَنْزِلِي فَنِمْتُ قَالَ كَأَنَّهُ كَئِيبٌ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأَتَيْتُهُ أَوْ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ صَدَّقَكَ وَعَذَرَكَ» وَتَلَا هَاتَيْنِ الْآتَيْنِ {هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ} حَتَّى خَتَمَ الْآيَتَيْنِ

✧ I heard Abdullah b. Ubayy b. Salul say, 'Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of God until they disperse.' So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him. Ubayy's son came to him and swore to him that he had not said that. The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ came to me and blamed me. I went to my home and slept—as if he was dejected. Then the Prophet ﷺ sent for me, and I came to him—or he said, I came to the Prophet ﷺ—and he said, "God has confirmed you and excused you," and he recited these two verses: 'They are the ones who say, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of God"' until he completed the two verses.
