أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ ثنا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا مُبَارَكُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ سَرِيعٍ قَالَ

«كُنْتُ أَنْشُدُهُ يَعْنِي النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَلَا أَعْرِفُ أَصْحَابَهُ حَتَّى جَاءَ رَجُلٌ بَعِيدٌ مَا بَيْنَ الْمَنَاكِبِ أَصْلَعُ» فَقِيلَ لِي اسْكُتِ اسْكُتْ فَقُلْتُ «وَاثُكْلَاهُ مِنْ هَذَا الَّذِي أَسْكُتُ لَهُ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ؟» فَقِيلَ لِي عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ

Translation

✧ "I was reciting poetry to him, meaning the Prophet ﷺ, and I did not recognize his Companions until a man came who was broad between the shoulders and bald." It was said to me, "Be quiet! Be quiet!" I said, "Alas, who is this for whom I must be quiet in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ?" It was said to me, "Umar b. al-Khattab."
