حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَوْ عَمِّهِ أَنَّ مَمْلُوكًا كَانَ يُقَالُ لَهُ كَيْسَانُ فَسَمَّى نَفْسَهُ قَيْسًا وادَّعَى إِلَى مَوْلَاهِ وَلَحِقَ بِالْكُوفَةِ فَرَكِبَ أَبُوهُ إِلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ فَقَالَ

يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ابْنِي وُلِدَ عَلَى فِرَاشِي ثُمَّ رَغِبَ عَنْي وادَّعَى إِلَى مَوْلَاهُ وَمَوْلَايَ وَقَالَ عُمَرُ لِزَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ أَمَا تَعْلَمُ إِنَّا كُنَّا نَقْرَأُ لَا تَرْغَبُوا عَنْ آبَائِكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ كُفْرٌ بِكُمْ فَقَالَ زَيْدٌ بَلَى فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ «انْطَلِقْ فَاقْرِنِ ابْنَكَ إِلَى بَعِيرِكَ فَانْطَلِقْ فَاضْرِبْ بَعِيرَكَ سَوْطًا وَابْنَكَ سَوْطًا حَتَّى تَأْتِيَ بِهِ أَهْلَكَ»

✧ “O Commander of the Faithful, my son was born on my bed, then he rejected me and claimed affiliation to his master and my master.” ʿUmar said to Zayd b. Thabit: “Do you not know that we used to recite, ‘Do not reject your fathers, for that is disbelief on your part’?” Zayd said, “Yes.” ʿUmar said to him: “Go and tie your son to your camel, then set off and strike your camel with a whip and your son with a whip until you bring him to your family.”
