✧ I used to serve the Messenger of God ﷺ. He gave me a piece of land, and he gave Abu Bakr a piece of land. Then worldly affairs came and we disagreed over a bunch of dates from a palm tree. Abu Bakr ؓ said: "It is within the boundary of my land," and I said: "It is within my boundary." There were words between me and Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr said a word to me that I disliked, and he regretted it. He said to me: "O Rabi'ah, say the like of it back to me so that it may be retaliation." I said: I will not do that. Abu Bakr said: "You will say it, or I will complain to the Messenger of God ﷺ against you." I said: I am not going to do it. He said: And he abandoned the land. Abu Bakr ؓ went off to the Prophet ﷺ, and I went off following him. Some people from Aslam came and said: "May God have mercy on Abu Bakr. Why would he complain to the Messenger of God against you when he is the one who said to you what he said?" I said: Do you know who this is? This is Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, the second of the two, the one with the gray hair of the Muslims. Beware lest he turn and see you supporting me against him, for he will become angry and go to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Messenger of God will become angry for his anger, and God will become angry for the anger of both of them, and Rabi'ah will perish. They said: What do you command us? He said: Go back. So Abu Bakr ؓ went to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and I followed him alone. I kept following until he reached the Prophet ﷺ and told him the story as it had happened. He raised his head to me and said: "O Rabi'ah, what is the matter between you and al-Siddiq?" I said: O Messenger of God, it was such and such, and he said a word to me that I disliked. He said to me: Say as I said to you so that it may be retaliation. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Yes, do not retaliate against him, but say: May God forgive you, O Abu Bakr. May God forgive you, O Abu Bakr." He said: Abu Bakr, may God have mercy on him, turned away weeping.
