al-Mu'jam al-Kabir (al-Tabarani) 4566

✧ Rabi'ah son of al-Harith son of Abdul-Muttalib son of Hashim, also known as Abu Arwa. His mother and the mother of his brother Abu Sufyan son of al-Harith are the same person, Azza bt. Qays bin Tariq from the offspring of al-Harith bin Fehr. She passed away in the twenty-third year. Nofal son of al-Harith, also known as Abu al-Harith, passed away in al-Madinah in the fifteenth year. He is the brother of their father and mother. All of them are siblings of Rabi'ah, Abu Sufyan, and Nofal.

حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ كَامِلٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ حَدَّثَنِي يُونُسُ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدٌ اللهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ أَنَّ عَبْدَ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنَ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ أَبَاهُ رَبِيعَةُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ وَعَبَّاسَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ قَالَا لِعَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ وَالْفَضْلِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ائْتِيَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُولَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ بَلَغَنَا مَا تَرَى مِنَ السِّنِّ فَأَحْبَبْنَا أَنْ نَتَزَوَّجَ وَأَنْتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَبَرُّ النَّاسِ وَأَوْصَلُهُمْ وَلَيْسَ عِنْدَ أَبَوَيْنَا مَا يُصْدِقَانِ عَنَّا فَاسْتَعْمِلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ عَلَى الصَّدَقَاتِ فَلْنُؤَدِّ إِلَيْكَ مَا يُؤَدِّي الْعُمَّالُ وَلْنُصِبْ مَا كَانَ فِيهَا مِنْ مَرْفَقٍ قَالَ فَأَتَى عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَنَحْنُ عَلَى تِلْكَ الْحَالِ فَقَالَ لَنَا لَا وَاللهِ لَا يَسْتَعْمِلُ مِنْكُمْ أَحَدًا عَلَى الصَّدَقَةِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَبِيعَةُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ هَذَا مِنْ حَسَدِكَ وبَغْيِكَ وَقَدْ نِلْتَ صِهْرَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ نَحْسُدْكَ عَلَيْهِ فَأَلْقَى عَلِيٌّ رِدَاءَهُ ثُمَّ اضْطَجَعَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ الْيَوْمَ وَاللهِ لَا أَدِيمُ مَقَامِي هَذَا حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ إِلَيْكُمَا ابْنَاكُمَا بِجَوَابِ مَا بَعَثْتُمَا بِهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ عَبْدُ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَانْطَلَقْتُ أَنَا وَالْفَضْلُ حَتَّى نُوَافِقَ صَلَاةَ الظُّهْرِ قَدْ قَامَتْ فَصَلَّيْنَا مَعَ النَّاسِ ثُمَّ أَسْرَعْتُ أَنَا وَالْفَضْلُ إِلَى بَابِ حُجْرَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَوْمَئِذٍ عِنْدَ زَيْنَبُ بِنْتُ جَحْشٍ فَقُمْنَا بِالْبَابِ حَتَّى أَتَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخَذَ بِأُذُنِي وَأُذُنِ الْفَضْلِ فَقَالَ «اخْرُجَا مَا تُصَرِّرَانِ» ثُمَّ دَخَلَ فَأَذِنَ لِي وَلِلْفَضْلِ فَدَخَلْنَا فَتَوَاكَلْنَا الْكَلَامَ قَلِيلًا ثُمَّ كَلَّمْتُهُ أَوْ كَلَّمَهُ الْفَضْلُ قَدْ شَكَّ فِي ذَلِكَ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَكَلَّمْنَاهُ بِالَّذِي أَمَرَنَا بِهِ أَبَوَانَا فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ بَصَرَهُ قِبَلَ سَقْفِ الْبَيْتِ حَتَّى طَالَ عَلَيْنَا أَنَّهُ لَا يَرْجِعُ إِلَيْنَا شَيْئًا وَحَتَّى رَأَيْنَا زَيْنَبَ تَلْمَعُ مِنْ وَرَاءِ الْحِجَابِ بِيَدِهَا تُرِيدُ أَنْ لَا نَعْجَلَ وَأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي أَمْرِنَا ثُمَّ خَفَضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ لَنَا «إِنَّ هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةُ إِنَّمَا هِي أَوْسَاخُ النَّاسِ وَإِنَّهَا لَا تَحِلُّ لِمُحَمَّدٍ وَلَا لِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ادْعُوا لِي نَوْفَلَ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ» فَدُعِيَ لَهُ نَوْفَلُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ فَقَالَ «يَا نَوْفَلُ أنْكِحْ عَبْدَ الْمُطَّلِبِ» قَالَ فَأَنْكَحَنِي نَوْفَلٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «ادْعُوا لِي مَحْمِيَةَ بْنَ جَزْءٍ» وَهُوَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي زُبَيْدٍ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اسْتَعْمَلَهُ عَلَى الْأَخْمَاسِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِمَحْمِيَةَ «أَنْكَحْ الْفَضْلَ» فَأَنْكَحَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «قُمْ فَأَصْدِقْ عَنْهُمَا مِنَ الْخُمُسِ كَذَا وَكَذَا» لَمْ يَسْمَعْهُ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ

✧ He informed him that his father Rabi'ah b. al-Harith b. 'Abd al-Muttalib and 'Abbas b. 'Abd al-Muttalib said to 'Abd al-Muttalib b. Rabi'ah and al-Fadl b. 'Abbas: "Go to the Messenger of God ﷺ and say: 'O Messenger of God, you see that we have reached marriageable age. We would like to marry. You, O Messenger of God, are the most dutiful and most gracious of people, but our fathers have nothing with which to pay our bridal dowers. So appoint us, O Messenger of God, over the sadaqat (charitable revenues), and we shall deliver to you what the collectors deliver, and we shall take whatever benefit there is in them.'" He said: 'Ali b. Abi Talib came to us while we were in that situation and said to us: "No, by God, he will not appoint any of you over the sadaqah." Rabi'ah b. al-Harith said to him: "This is from your envy and your wrongdoing. You have attained the Prophet's ﷺ kinship by marriage, and we did not envy you for it." So 'Ali threw down his cloak and lay upon it, then said: "I am Abu al-Hasan today. By God, I will not leave this place of mine until your two sons return to you with the answer to what you sent to the Messenger of God ﷺ." 'Abd al-Muttalib said: So al-Fadl and I went off until we arrived just as the noon prayer was being established. We prayed with the people, then al-Fadl and I hurried to the door of the Messenger of God's ﷺ chamber. That day he was with Zaynab bt. Jahsh. We stood at the door until the Messenger of God ﷺ came. He took hold of my ear and al-Fadl's ear and said: "Go out, you two are muttering." Then he entered and gave permission for me and al-Fadl. We entered and left the talking to each other for a while. Then I spoke to him, or al-Fadl spoke to him - 'Abd Allah was uncertain about that - and we spoke to him about what our fathers had instructed us. The Messenger of God ﷺ fell silent. Then he raised his gaze toward the ceiling of the house until it seemed to us that he would not return to us with anything, and until we saw Zaynab gesturing from behind the curtain with her hand, meaning that we should not be hasty and that the Messenger of God ﷺ was considering our matter. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ lowered his head and said to us: "This sadaqah is but the filth of people, and it is not lawful for Muhammad or for the family of Muhammad. Call Nawfal b. al-Harith for me." So Nawfal b. al-Harith was called for him. He said: "O Nawfal, marry 'Abd al-Muttalib." He said: So Nawfal married me. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Call Mahmiyah b. Jaz' for me." He was a man from Banu Zubayd whom the Messenger of God ﷺ had appointed over the khums (fifths). The Messenger of God ﷺ said to Mahmiyah: "Marry al-Fadl." So he married him. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Stand and give their bridal dower from the khums, such and such." 'Abd Allah b. al-Harith did not hear it.
