✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Allah ﷻ said to Dāwūd ﷺ, “Build for Me a house on the earth.” So Dāwūd built a house for himself before the house he had been commanded to build. Then Allah ﷻ revealed to him: “O Dāwūd, you erected your house before My house.” He said: “O Lord, thus You decreed: whoever possesses something keeps it exclusively for himself.” Then he began building the mosque. When the wall was completed, two-thirds of it collapsed. He complained of that to Allah ﷻ, and Allah ﷻ revealed to him: “It is not fitting that you build a house for Me.” He said: “O Lord, why?” He said: “Because of the bloodshed committed by your hands.” He said: “O Lord, was it not in Your love and for Your sake?” He said: “Yes, but they are My servants, and I am more merciful to them.” That distressed him, so Allah ﷻ revealed to him: “Do not grieve, for I shall complete its construction through the hands of your son Sulaymān.” When Dāwūd died, Sulaymān began building it. When it was completed, he offered sacrifices, slaughtered offerings, and gathered the Children of Isrā’īl. Allah ﷻ revealed to him: “I see joy at the building of My house, so ask Me and I shall give you.” He said: “I ask You for three qualities: a judgment that coincides with Your judgment, a kingdom that no one after me should have, and that whoever comes to this house desiring nothing but prayer in it should come out of his sins like the day his mother gave birth to him.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “As for two, they have been granted to him, and I hope that he has been granted the third.”
