حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ شَيْبَانَ ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الزُّهْرِيُّ ثنا رِفَاعَةُ بْنُ هُرَيْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ رَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ حَدَّثَنِي جَدِّي عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

جِئْتُ أَنَا وِالْخَطْمِيُّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ يُرِيدُ بَدْرًا فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَخْرُجَ مَعَكَ فَجَعَلَ يَقْبِضُ يَدَهُ وَيَقُولُ «إِنِّي أَسْتَصْغِرُكَ وَلَا أَدْرِي مَا تَصْنَعُ إِذَا لَقِيتَ الْقَوْمَ؟» فَقُلْتُ أَتَعْلَمُ أَنْ أَرْمِيَ مَنْ رَمَى؟ فَرَدَّنِي فَلَمْ أَشْهَدْ بَدْرًا

✧ I came with al-Khatmi to the Prophet ﷺ when he was intending to go to Badr and said: 'O Messenger of God, I want to go out with you.' He began to clench his hand and said: 'I consider you too young, and I do not know what you will do when you meet the people.' I said: 'Do you know that I can shoot whoever shoots?' So he sent me back, and I did not witness Badr.
