حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ الْقَاضِي ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ حَنْظَلَةَ بْنِ قَيْسٍ عَنْ رَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ قَالَ
«كُنَّا بَنِي حَارِثٍ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ حَقْلًا وَكُنَّا نُكْرِي الْأَرْضَ وَنَشْتَرِطُ عَلَى الْأُكْرَةِ أَنَّ مَا سَقَى الْمَاذِيَانَاتِ وَالرَّبِيعَ فَلَنَا وَمَا سَقَتِ الْجَدَاوِلُ فَهُوَ لَكُمْ فَرُبَّمَا هَلَكَ هَذَا وَسَلِمَ هَذَا وَرُبَّمَا سَلِمَ هَذَا وَهَلَكَ هَذَا فَنَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ ذَلِكَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ عِنْدَنَا يَوْمَئِذٍ ذَهَبٌ وَلَا فِضَّةٌ فَنَعْلَمُ ذَلِكَ»

✧ "We, the Banū Ḥārith, were the largest field owners among the people of Madinah, and we used to lease land and stipulate with the tenants that whatever the mādhiyānāt and the spring irrigated would be ours, and whatever the streams irrigated would be yours. Sometimes this would perish while that would be safe, and sometimes this would be safe while that would perish. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from that. At that time we had no gold or silver, so we knew that."
