✧ I entered upon Abu Bakr ؓ to visit him during the illness in which he died. I greeted him and asked him how he was and he sat up straight. I said, "By the praise of God, you are recovering." He said, "Indeed, as you see, I am in pain, and you have made a distraction for me along with my pain. I made a covenant for you after me and chose for you the best of you in my own judgment, so every one of you has his nose swollen at that, hoping that the matter will be his. And I saw that the world has turned towards you, and it has not yet turned, and it is coming. You will adorn your houses with silk curtains and brocade cushions, and you will feel pain from lying on coarse wool as if one of you is on the thorns of Saʿdan. By God, if one of you were to come forward and have his neck struck without hadd punishment, it would be better for him than to roam in the flood of the world." Then he said, "Indeed, I regret nothing except three things I did that I wish I had not done, three things I did not do that I wish I had done, and three things I wish I had asked the Messenger of God ﷺ about. As for the three things I wish I had not done: I wish I had not uncovered the house of Fatimah and left it, and had not closed the war upon myself. I wish that on the day of the Saqifah of Banu Saʿidah I had thrown the matter upon the neck of one of the two men, Abu ʿUbaydah or ʿUmar, so that he would have been the Commander of the Believers and I would have been a minister. And I wish that when I dispatched Khalid b. al-Walid to the people of apostasy, I had stayed at Dhu al-Qassah, so if the Muslims prevailed, they prevailed, and if not, I would have been a support or a reinforcement. As for the things I wish I had done: I wish that on the day al-Ashʿath was brought to me as a prisoner I had struck his neck, for it seems to me that he will be an evil frame around him. I wish that on the day al-Fuja'ah al-Sulami was brought to me, I had not burned him but had killed him quickly or released him successfully. And I wish that when I dispatched Khalid b. al-Walid to Syria, I had dispatched ʿUmar to Iraq, so that I would have stretched out both my hands, right and left, in the way of God ﷻ. As for the three things I wish I had asked the Messenger of God ﷺ about: I wish I had asked him to whom this matter belongs, so that its people would not dispute it. I wish I had asked him whether the Ansar have a share in this matter. And I wish I had asked him about the paternal aunt and the brother's daughter, for I have a need in my heart concerning them."
