✧ The Prophet ﷺ sent me to Caesar, the ruler of the Romans, with a letter. I said, 'Ask permission for the messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' It was told to Caesar, 'There is a man at the door who claims that he is the messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' They were alarmed at that. He said, 'Let him enter.' So he admitted me to him, and with him were his patricians. I gave him the letter, and it was read to him. In it was: 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, to Caesar, the ruler of the Romans.' A nephew of his, ruddy, blue-eyed, and lank-haired, snorted and said, 'Do not read the letter today. He began with himself and wrote "ruler of the Romans" and did not write "king of the Romans."' He said: The letter was read until they finished, then he ordered them and they left his presence. Then he sent for me, so I entered upon him. He asked me and I informed him. He sent for the bishop, and he entered upon him; he was the one in charge of their affairs, and they acted according to his opinion and his word. When he read the letter, the bishop said, 'By Allah, he is the one whom Moses and Jesus gave us glad tidings of, the one we have been waiting for.' Caesar said, 'What do you command me?' He said, 'As for me, I believe in him and follow him.' Caesar said, 'I know that it is so, but I cannot do it. If I do, my kingdom will be gone and the Romans will kill me.'
