✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched a detachment as spies for him and appointed over them 'Asim b. Thabit, who was the grandfather of 'Asim b. 'Umar. They set out until when they were in part of the way between 'Usfan and Makkah and stopped at a place, they were reported to a tribe of Hudhayl called Banu Lihyan. They pursued them with nearly a hundred archers, tracking their traces until they reached a stopping place where they found a date-stone from dates they had taken as provision from the dates of Madinah. They said, 'This is from the dates of Yathrib,' and followed their traces until they caught up with them. When 'Asim b. Thabit and his companions sensed them, they took refuge on a hillock. The people came and surrounded them and said, 'You have a covenant and a pledge that if you come down to us, we will not kill any man of you.' 'Asim b. Thabit said, 'As for me, I will not descend under the protection of an unbeliever. O Allah, inform Your Messenger about us.' So they fought them, and they shot them until they killed 'Asim among seven men. Khubayb b. 'Adi and Zayd b. Dathina remained until they sold them in Makkah. Banu al-Harith b. 'Amir b. Nawfal bought Khubayb, and al-Harith had been killed on the day of Badr. He remained with them as a prisoner until they resolved to kill him. He borrowed a razor from one of the daughters of al-Harith, and she lent it to him to shave his pubic hair. She said: 'I became heedless of a little child of mine, who crawled to him until he reached him. He took him and placed him on his thigh. When she saw him, she became terrified with a fright that he recognized in her, while the razor was in his hand. He said, "Do you fear that I will kill him? I would not do that, if Allah wills."' She used to say, 'I have not seen a prisoner better than Khubayb. I saw him eating from a bunch of grapes, and there was no fruit in Makkah that day, while he was bound in iron. It was nothing but provision that Allah provided him.' Then they took him out of the sanctuary to kill him. He said, 'Let me pray two rak'ahs.' So he prayed two rak'ahs, then said, 'Were it not that you would think that what is in me is fear of death, I would have increased.' He was the first to institute the two rak'ahs at the time of killing. Then he said, 'O Allah, count them by number,' then he said...
