حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ مَلُولٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْمُقْرِئُ ثنا حَيْوَةُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ وَابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَسْلَمُ أَبُو عِمْرَانَ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ قَالَ

قُلْنَا بَيْنَنَا بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ سِرًّا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ أَمْوَالَنَا قَدْ ضَاعَتْ فَلَوْ أَنَّا قُمْنَا فِيهَا فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ فِي كِتَابِهِ يَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا مَا هَمَمْنَا بِهِ {وَأَنْفِقُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ} فِي الْإِقَامَةِ فِي الْأَمْوَالِ وَإِصْلَاحِهَا وَتَرْكِ الْجِهَادِ وَالنَّفَقَةِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ ﷻ

✧ We said among ourselves, secretly from the Messenger of God ﷺ: “Our wealth has been lost, so if only we could devote ourselves to it.” Then God ﷻ revealed in His Book, refuting what we had intended: “And spend in the way of God and do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction” (2:195), concerning staying with wealth and improving it, and abandoning jihad and spending in the way of God ﷻ.
