✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ said while we were in Madinah: “I have been informed of the caravan of Abu Sufyan, that it is approaching. Would you like us to go out against this caravan? Perhaps God will grant it to us as booty.” We said: Yes. So he went out and we went out with him. When we had traveled for a day or two, he said to us: “What do you think about the people, for they have been informed of your departure?” We said: No, by God, we have no strength to fight the enemy, but we wanted the caravan. Then he said: “What do you think about fighting the people?” We said the same. Al-Miqdad b. Amr said: Then we will not say to you, O Messenger of God, as the people of Moses said to Moses: “So go, you and your Lord, and fight. We are sitting right here.” He said: Then we, the Ansar, wished that we had said as al-Miqdad said, more beloved to us than having great wealth. Then God ﷻ sent down to His Messenger: “Just as your Lord brought you out of your home in truth, while a party of the believers were unwilling, disputing with you about the truth after it had become clear, as if they were being driven to death while looking on.” Then God ﷻ sent down: “I am with you, so strengthen those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, so strike above the necks and strike every fingertip of theirs.” And He said: “And when God promised you one of the two groups that it would be yours, and you wished that the one without power would be yours.” The one with power was the people, and the one without power was the caravan. When He promised us one of the two groups, either the people or the caravan, our souls were at ease. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ sent a man to see what was before the people. He said: I saw a black mass, and I do not know. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “It is they, it is they. Come, let us count ourselves.” We did so, and we were three hundred and thirteen men. The Messenger of God told us our number, and that pleased him, and he praised God and said: “The number of the companions of Talut.” Then we met the people and formed ranks. Some of us advanced in front of the row, and the Messenger of God ﷺ looked at them and said: “With me, with me.” Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “O God, I implore You to fulfill Your promise.” Ibn Rawaha said: O Messenger of God, I wish to advise you, and the Messenger of God ﷺ is the best one to be advised. God ﷻ is too great for you to implore His promise. He said: “O Ibn Rawaha, I will certainly implore God to fulfill His promise, for God does not break His appointment.” Then he took a handful of dust and the Messenger of God ﷺ threw it in the faces of the people, and they were defeated. Then God ﷻ sent down: “You did not throw when you threw, but God threw.” We killed and took captives. Umar ؓ said: O Messenger of God, I do not think you should have captives, for we are only callers and reconcilers. We, the Ansar, said: Umar only urges this out of envy toward us. The Messenger of God ﷺ slept, then woke and said: “Summon Umar for me.” He was summoned, and he said: God ﷻ has sent down to me: “It is not for a prophet to have captives until he has made much slaughter in the land. You desire the goods of this world, but God desires the Hereafter. And God is Mighty, Wise.”
