✧ I was disturbed by the night visitor of the house, so I complained about that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said—and there was a small window in a house of ours—“Lie in wait for it. When you see something, say: ‘Begone! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ calls you.’” He said: So I lay in wait, and something dangled down from the small window. I leaped at it and said, “Begone! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ calls you.” And I seized it. It pleaded with me and said, “I will not return.” He said: So I released it. In the morning I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, “What did your captive do?” I told him what had happened, and he said, “Indeed, he will return.” He said: I did that three times, each time seizing him and telling the Prophet ﷺ what had happened. On the third time, I seized him and said, “You will not part from me until I bring you to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” He adjured me and pleaded with me, saying, “I will teach you something which, if you say it at night, no jinn or thief will come near you.” He said: “Recite the Verse of the Throne.” He said: So I released him, then I came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, “What did your captive do?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, he adjured me and pleaded with me until I had mercy on him, and he taught me something which, if I say it, no jinn or thief will come near me.” He said, “He spoke the truth, though he is a liar.”
