✧ Abu Ayyub b. Zayd al-Ansari, with whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed when he migrated to Madinah, raided the land of the Romans. He passed by Mu'awiyah ؓ, who treated him coldly. He went on, then returned from his raid and passed by him again, and he treated him coldly and did not raise his head to him. He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed me that we will see selfishness (favoritism) after him." Mu'awiyah said, "What did he command you?" He said, "He commanded us to be patient." He said, "Then be patient." Then 'Abd Allah b. 'Abbas came to Basra, and 'Ali ؓ had appointed him over it. He said, "O Abu Ayyub, I want to move out of my dwelling for you as I moved out for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He ordered his family and they moved out, and he gave him everything that the house enclosed. When he was leaving, he said, "What is your need?" He said, "My need is my stipend and eight slaves to work in my land." His stipend was four thousand, so he multiplied it for him five times and gave him twenty thousand and forty slaves.
