حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ أَبِي الطَّاهِرِ بْنِ السَّرْحِ الْمِصْرِيُّ ثنا يُوسُفُ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ الْكُوفِيُّ ثنا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ عَنِ الْأَغَرِّ أَبِي مَالِكٍ قَالَ
لَمَّا أَرَادَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ أَنَّ يَسْتَخْلِفَ عُمَرَ بَعَثَ إِلَيْهِ فَدَعَاهُ فَأَتَاهُ فَقَالَ «إِنِّي أَدْعُوكَ إِلَى أَمْرٍ مُتْعِبٍ لِمَنْ وَلِيَهُ فَاتَّقِ اللهَ يَا عُمَرُ بِطَاعَتِهِ وَأَطِعْهُ بِتَقْوَاهُ فَإِنَّ الْمُتَّقِيَ آمِنٌ مَحْفُوظٌ ثُمَّ إِنَّ الْأَمْرَ مَعْرُوضٌ لَا يَسْتَوْجِبُهُ إِلَّا مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهِ فَمَنْ أَمَرَ بِالْحَقِّ وَعَمِلَ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَأَمَرَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَعَمِلَ بِالْمُنْكِرِ يُوشِكُ أَنَّ تَنْقَطِعَ أُمْنِيَّتُهُ وَأَنْ يَحْبَطَ عَمَلُهُ فَإِنْ أَنْتَ وُلِّيتَ عَلَيْهِمْ أَمْرَهُمْ فَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَجِفَّ يَدُكَ مِنْ دِمَائِهِمْ وَأَنْ تَضْمُرَ بَطْنُكَ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنْ يَجِفَّ لِسَانُكَ عَنْ أَعْرَاضِهِمْ فَافْعَلْ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ»

✧ When Abu Bakr ؓ intended to appoint 'Umar as his successor, he sent for him and called him. He came to him and he said: "I am calling you to a matter that is exhausting for the one who undertakes it. So fear Allah, O 'Umar, through obedience to Him, and obey Him through fear of Him, for the God-fearing is secure and protected. Then indeed the affair is presented [as a test]; none deserves it except the one who acts upon it. Whoever commands the truth but acts upon falsehood, and commands the right but acts upon the wrong, his hope is about to be cut off and his deeds to be nullified. If you are given authority over them, then if you are able to keep your hand dry from their blood, to keep your stomach empty of their wealth, and to keep your tongue from their honors, then do so. And there is no power except with Allah."
