حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ الْمُسْتَمْلِي ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ خَبَّابٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ فَقَالَ
رَمَقْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ لَأَنْظُرَنَّ كَيْفَ صَلَاةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ جِئْتُ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَقَدْ صَلَّيْتَ اللَّيْلَةَ صَلَاةً مَا رَأَيْتُكَ صَلَّيْتَ مِثْلَهَا فَقَالَ «إِنَّهَا صَلَاةُ رَهَبٍ وَرَغَبٍ سَأَلْتُ رَبِّي فِيهَا ثَلَاثًا فَأَعْطَانِي اثْنَتَيْنِ وَمَنَعَنِي وَاحِدَةً سَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُهْلِكَنَا بِمَا أَهْلَكَ بِهِ الْأُمَمَ قَبْلَنَا فَأَعْطَانِيهَا وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُسَلِّطَ عَلَيْنَا عَدُوًّا فَأَعْطَانِيهَا وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يَلْبِسَنَا شِيَعًا فَمَنَعَنِيهَا»

✧ I observed the Messenger of God ﷺ and said, “I will certainly watch how the Messenger of God ﷺ prays.” He prayed, and when he finished, I came to him from in front of him and said, “O Messenger of God, tonight you prayed a prayer the like of which I have not seen you pray.” He said, “It is a prayer of fear and hope. I asked my Lord three things in it; He granted me two and withheld one. I asked Him not to destroy us with what He destroyed the nations before us, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to set an enemy over us, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to make us into conflicting factions, and He withheld that from me.”
