حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ثنا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ حَدَّثَنِي خَالِدُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عَقِيلٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ
أَنَّهُ بَاتَ يَجُرُّ الْجَرِيرَ عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ عَلَى صَاعَيْنِ مِنْ تَمْرٍ فَانْقَلَبَ بِأَحَدِهِمَا إِلَى أَهْلِهِ يَنْتَفِعُونَ بِهِ وَجَاءَ بِالْآخَرِ يَتَقَرَّبُ بِهِ إِلَى اللهِ ﷻ فَأَتَى بِهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «انْثُرْهُ فِي الصَّدَقَةِ» فَقَالَ فِيهِ الْمُنَافِقُونَ وسَخِرُوا مِنْهُ مَا كَانَ أَغْنَى هَذَا أَنْ يَتَقَرَّبَ إِلَى اللهِ بِصَاعٍ مِنْ تَمْرٍ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ} إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَتَيْنِ
Translation

✧ He spent the night dragging a rope on his back for two saa‘s of dates. He turned back with one of them to his family, who benefited from it, and he brought the other to draw near to God Almighty. He brought it to the Messenger of God ﷺ and told him. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: “Scatter it among the charity.” The hypocrites said about him and mocked him: “This man had no need to draw near to God with a saa‘ of dates.” Then God Almighty sent down: {Those who criticize the volunteers among the believers concerning charities, and those who find nothing but their effort} to the end of the two verses.
