✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Khaybar, al-Hajjaj b. ‘Ilat said: “O Messenger of Allah, I have wealth in Makkah and family there, and I want to go to them. Am I absolved if I disparage you or say something?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him permission to say whatever he wished. He said: So when he arrived, he went to his wife and said: “Collect whatever you have, for I want to buy from the spoils of Muhammad and his companions. They have been plundered and their wealth taken.” That spread through Makkah: the Muslims withdrew in dismay, while the polytheists showed joy and delight. The news reached al-‘Abbas b. ‘Abd al-Muttalib, who was stricken and could not stand. Then he sent a servant to al-Hajjaj b. ‘Ilat, saying: “Woe to you! What have you brought? What are you saying? What Allah, mighty and majestic, promised is better than what you have brought.” Al-Hajjaj said: “Convey peace to Abu al-Fadl and tell him to clear a place for me in one of his houses so I may come to him, for the news is what will please him.” His servant came, and when he reached the door he said: “Rejoice, O Abu al-Fadl!” Al-‘Abbas leapt up in joy and kissed him between the eyes. The servant told him what al-Hajjaj had said, and he freed him. Then al-Hajjaj came to him and informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had conquered Khaybar, taken their wealth as spoils, and the shares Allah allotted fell upon their wealth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ chose Safiyya bt. Huyayy for himself and gave her the choice between his freeing her and being his wife or returning to her people, and she chose to be freed and become his wife. “But I came for what I have here; I wanted to collect it and take it away. I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he permitted me to say whatever I wished. So conceal it for me for three days, then mention whatever you like.” He said: His wife collected all the jewelry and goods she had and gave it to him, and he departed with it. After three days, al-‘Abbas went to al-Hajjaj’s wife and said: “What has your husband done?” She told him that he had left on such-and-such a day, and said: “May Allah not grieve you, O Abu al-Fadl; what reached you distressed us.” He said: “Indeed, Allah will not grieve me, and by Allah’s praise it was only what we loved. Allah opened Khaybar to His Messenger ﷺ and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ chose Safiyya for himself. If you have any need of your husband, go join him.” She said: “I think, by Allah, you are truthful.” He said: “Indeed, by Allah, I am truthful, and the matter is as I told you.” Then he went to the gatherings of Quraysh, and as he passed them they said: “Nothing befalls you but good, O Abu al-Fadl.” He said: “Nothing befalls me but good, by Allah’s praise. Al-Hajjaj b. ‘Ilat informed me that Allah opened Khaybar to His Messenger ﷺ, the shares of Allah took effect, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ chose Safiyya for himself. He asked me to conceal it for him for three days, and he came only to take his wealth and whatever he had here, then depart.” So Allah turned back upon the polytheists the grief that had been on the Muslims, and the Muslims who had entered their homes in despair came out until they reached al-‘Abbas, and he told them the news. The Muslims rejoiced, and Allah returned upon the polytheists whatever grief, anger, or sorrow had been there.
