حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي السَّرِيِّ الْعَسْقَلَانِيُّ ثنا مُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو الْغِفَارِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي جَدِّي قَالَ

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو الْغِفَارِيِّ حِينَ جَاءَهُ رَسُولُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ فَقَالَ إِنَّ عَلِيًّا ؓ يَقُولُ إِنَّكَ أَحَقُّ مَنْ أَعَانَنَا عَلَى هَذَا الْأَمْرِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ خَلِيلِي ابْنَ عَمِّكَ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِذَا كَانَ الْأَمْرُ هَكَذَا أَوْ مِثْلَ هَذَا أَنْ أَتَّخِذَ سَيْفًا مِنْ خَشَبٍ» فَقَدِ اتَّخَذْتُ سَيْفًا مِنْ خَشَبٍ

✧ I was with al-Ḥakam b. ʿAmr al-Ghifārī when the messenger of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ came to him and said: “ʿAlī ؓ says: ‘You are the most deserving of those who help us in this matter.’” He replied: “I heard my close friend, your cousin ﷺ, say: ‘When the matter is like this, or like this, I will take a sword of wood.’ So I have taken a sword of wood.”
