حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبَانَ ثنا عُبَيْدَةُ بْنُ أَسْوَدَ عَنْ مُجَالِدٍ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ

قُلْنَا كَيْفَ أَصَابَ حُذَيْفَةُ مَا لَمْ يُصِبْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَلَا عُمَرُ؟ قَالَ صِلَةُ بْنُ زُفَرَ قَدْ وَاللهِ سَأَلْنَا حُذَيْفَةَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ كُنْتُ أَمْشِي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي مَسِيرٍ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فَأَدْلَجْنَا دُلْجَةً فَنَعَسَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ فَقَالَ أُنَاسٌ لَوْ دَفَعْنَاهُ السَّاعَةَ فَوَقَعَ فَانْدَقَّتْ عُنُقُهُ اسْتَرَحْنَا مِنْهُ فَلَمَّا سَمِعْتُهُمْ تَقَدَّمْتُهُمْ فَسِرْتُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهُمْ فَجَعَلْتُ أَقْرَأُ سُورَةً مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ فَاسْتَيْقَظَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «مَنْ هَذَا؟» قُلْتُ حُذَيْفَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «ادْنُ» فَدَنَوْتُ فَقَالَ «مَا سَمِعْتَ هَؤُلَاءِ خَلْفَكَ مَا قَالُوا؟» قُلْتُ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؛ وَلِذَلِكَ سِرْتُ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُمْ قَالَ «أَمَا إِنَّهُمْ مُنافِقُونَ فُلَانٌ وَفُلَانٌ وَفُلَانٌ»

✧ We said: How did Hudhayfa attain what Abu Bakr and Umar did not attain? Sila b. Zufar said: By God, we asked Hudhayfa about that, and he said: I was walking with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a journey one night, and we traveled in the early part of the night. The Messenger of God ﷺ dozed off on his mount, and some people said, "If we pushed him now, he would fall and his neck would break, and we would be relieved of him." When I heard them, I went ahead of them and walked between him and them, and I began reciting a surah of the Quran. The Messenger of God ﷺ woke up and said, "Who is this?" I said, "Hudhayfa, O Messenger of God." He said, "Come closer." So I drew near, and he said, "Did you hear what those behind you said?" I said, "Yes, O Messenger of God; that is why I walked between you and them." He said, "Indeed, they are hypocrites: so-and-so, so-and-so, and so-and-so."
