✧ Mu'awiyah said to him: "O Hawdhah, did you witness Badr?" He said: "Yes, O Commander of the Faithful, against me, not for me." He said: "How old were you then?" He said: "On that day I was a sturdy, compact youth, like a solid boulder. It is as if I am looking at them when they lined up against us in a long row, and it is as if I am looking at the gleam of their swords like the rays of the sun through the gaps in the clouds. I did not regain my senses until the vanguard of the people overwhelmed us, at their head 'Ali b. Abi Talib ؓ, a mighty lion, striking ferociously, saying: 'You will never eat dates in the belly of Makkah; you will never eat dates in the belly of Makkah.' Hamzah b. 'Abd al-Muttalib followed him, with a white feather on his chest by which he was marked, as if he were a camel trampling dry grass. I was terrified of the two of them, and the two of them turned upon Hanzalah," meaning Mu'awiyah's brother. Mu'awiyah ؓ said: "Away from you, and no ingratitude to Allah. You have gone on. I wish I knew when you rested, O Hawdhah." He said: "By Allah, O Commander of the Faithful, I did not rest until I looked at the hills of Arthad and said: I wish I knew what happened to Hanzalah." Mu'awiyah said: "By your mentioning Hanzalah, you are like the rich man remembering his poor brother, for he hardly mentions him except drowsy or half-asleep."
