حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنِي شُرَحْبِيلُ بْنُ مُدْرِكٍ الْجُعْفِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ نُجَيٍّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ

أَنَّهُ سَافَرَ مَعَ عَلِيٍّ ؓ فَلَمَّا حَاذَى نِينَوَى قَالَ صَبْرًا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ صَبْرًا بِشَطِّ الْفُرَاتِ قُلْتُ وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَعَيْنَاهُ تَفِيضَانِ فَقُلْتُ هَلْ أَغْضَبَكَ أَحَدٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ مَالِي أَرَى عَيْنَيْكَ مُفِيضَتَيْنِ؟ قَالَ قَامَ مِنْ عِنْدِي جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ فَأَخْبَرَنِي أَنَّ أُمَّتِي تَقْتُلُ الْحُسَيْنَ ابْنِي ثُمَّ قَالَ هَلْ لَكَ أَنْ أُرِيَكَ مِنْ تُرْبَتِهِ؟ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَمَدَّ يَدَهُ فَقَبَضَ فَلَمَّا رَأَيْتُهَا لَمْ أَمْلِكْ عَيْنَيَّ أَنْ فَاضَتَا

Translation

✧ He traveled with Ali ؓ, and when he came parallel to Nineveh, he said: “Patience, Abu Abd Allah, patience by the bank of the Euphrates.” I said: “And what is that?” He said: “I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day while his eyes were overflowing [with tears], so I said: ‘Has someone angered you, O Messenger of Allah? Why do I see your eyes overflowing?’ He said: ‘Jibril ﷺ had just left me and informed me that my ummah will kill al-Husayn, my son.’ Then he said: ‘Would you like me to show you some of his soil?’ I said: ‘Yes.’ So he stretched out his hand and grasped [some], and when I saw it, I could not control my eyes from overflowing.”
