حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ أَنَا خَالِدٌ عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَمِيلَةَ

أَنَّ الْحَسَنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ ؓ حِينَ قُتِلَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ اسْتُخْلِفَ فَبَيْنَمَا هُوَ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ إِذْ وَثَبَ عَلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ فَطَعَنَهُ بِخِنْجَرٍ فِي وَرِكِهِ فَتَمَرَّضَ مِنْهَا أَشْهُرًا ثُمَّ قَامَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَخْطُبُ فَقَالَ يَا أَهْلَ الْعِرَاقِ اتَّقُوا اللهَ فِينَا فَإِنَّا أُمَرَاؤُكُمْ وَضِيفَانُكُمْ وَنَحْنُ أَهْلُ الْبَيْتِ الَّذِي قَالَ اللهُ ﷻ {إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا} فَمَا زَالَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَكَلَّمُ حَتَّى مَا يُرَى فِي الْمَسْجِدِ إِلَّا بَاكِيًا

Translation

✧ When Al-Hasan ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) became the leader after Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed, while he was leading the people in prayer, a man attacked him and stabbed him in the thigh with a dagger. He was bedridden because of it for months. Then he stood on the pulpit to deliver a sermon and said: "O people of Iraq, fear Allah concerning us, for we are your leaders and your guests. We are the family of the house about whom Allah Almighty said: {Allah only desires to remove defilement from you, O people of the household, and to purify you thoroughly}." He continued speaking that day until no one in the mosque was seen except that they were weeping.
