حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ النَّوْفَلِيُّ الْمَدِينِيُّ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الدَّرَاوَرْدِيُّ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ دَعَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَسَارَّهُ ثُمَّ قَامَ عَلِيٌّ فَجَاءَ الصُّفَّةَ فَوَجَدَ الْعَبَّاسَ وَعَقِيلًا وَالْحُسَيْنَ فَشَاوَرَهُمْ فِي تَزْوِيجِ أُمِّ كُلْثُومٍ عُمَرَ فَغَضِبَ عَقِيلٌ
وَقَالَ يَا عَلِيُّ مَا تَزِيدُكَ الْأَيَّامُ وَالشُّهورُ وَالسِّنُونَ إِلَّا الْعَمَى فِي أَمْرِكَ وَاللهِ لَئِنْ فَعَلْتَ لَيَكُونَنَّ وَلَيَكُونَنَّ لِأَشْيَاءَ عَدَدُهَا وَمَضَى يَجُرُّ ثَوْبَهُ فَقَالَ عَلَيٌّ لِلْعَبَّاسِ وَاللهِ مَا ذَاكَ مِنْهُ نَصِيحَةٌ وَلَكِنَّ دِرَّةَ عُمَرَ أَخْرَجَتْهُ إِلَى مَا تَرَى أَمَا وَاللهِ مَا ذَاكَ رَغْبَةً فِيكَ يَا عَقِيلُ وَلَكِنْ قَدْ أَخْبَرَنِي عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «كُلُّ سَبَبٍ وَنَسَبٍ مُنْقَطِعٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِلَّا سَبَبِي ونَسَبي» فَضَحِكَ عُمَرُ ؓ وَقَالَ «وَيْحَ عَقِيلٍ سَفيهٌ أَحْمَقُ»

✧ He said: “O 'Ali, the days, months, and years only increase you in blindness regarding your affair. By Allah, if you do it, there will certainly be—there will certainly be matters whose number is known.” Then he went off dragging his garment. 'Ali said to al-'Abbas: “By Allah, that from him is not sincere advice, but rather 'Umar's whip has brought him out to what you see. By Allah, it is not desire for you, O 'Aqil, but 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ informed me that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Every tie and lineage will be severed on the Day of Resurrection except my tie and my lineage.’” So 'Umar ؓ laughed and said: “Woe to 'Aqil, a fool and an idiot.”
