حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْبَزَّارُ ثنا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ قَيْسٍ عَنْ جَرِيرٍ قَالَ
كُنْتُ بِالْيَمَنِ وَمَعِي ذُو كَلَاعٍ وَذُو عَمْرٍو فَأَقْبَلْتُ أُخْبِرُهُمْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ ذُو عَمْرٍو يَا جَرِيرُ إِنْ يَكُ صَاحِبُكَ كَمَا تَذْكُرُ لَقَدْ أَتَى عَلَى أَجَلِهِ مُنْذُ ثَلَاثٍ فَرَفَعَ لَنَا رَجُلٌ فَقُلْنَا مَا الْخَبَرُ قَالُوا قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَاسْتُخْلِفَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ وَالنَّاسُ صَالِحُونَ ثُمَّ رَجَعْنَا فَقَالَا أَقْرِئْ صَاحِبَكَ السَّلَامَ ثُمَّ قَالَ ذُو عَمْرٍو يَا جَرِيرُ إِنَّكُمْ لَنْ تَزَالُوا صَالِحَينَ مَا إِذَا هَلَكَ أَمِيرٌ قَامَ أَمِيرٌ فَإِذَا مَا كَانَ سُيُوفًا كُنْتُمْ مُلُوكًا تَرْضَوْنَ رِضَا الْمُلُوكِ وَتَغْضَبُونَ غَضَبَ الْمُلُوكِ

✧ I was in Yemen with Dhū Kalāʿ and Dhū ʿAmr. I came to inform them about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Dhū ʿAmr said: "O Jarir, if your companion is as you describe, his term has already come three days ago." Then a man was raised up for us, and we said: "What is the news?" They said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has passed away, and Abu Bakr ؓ has been appointed as his successor, and the people are righteous." Then we returned, and they said: "Convey peace to your companion." Then Dhū ʿAmr said: "O Jarir, you will remain righteous as long as when a leader dies, another leader stands up. But when it becomes swords, you will become kings, pleased with the pleasure of kings and angry with the anger of kings."
