حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ اللَّيْثِ الْجَوْهَرِيُّ وَالْقَاسِمُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ الْخَطَّابِيُّ قَالَا ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ لُوَيْنَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَابِرٍ عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ عَنْ عَامِرٍ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ

سَأَلْتُ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ قَيْسٍ كَيْفَ كَانَ أَمْرُهَا؟ قَالَتْ طَلَّقَنِي زَوْجِي ثَلَاثًا جَمِيعًا فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ زَعَمَ أَحْمَائِي أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ لِي سُكْنَى وَلَا نَفَقَةً قَالَ «صَدَقُوا اذْهَبِي فَاعْتَدِّي فِي بَيْتِ ابْنِ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ» وَكَانَ أَعْمَى قَالَتْ فَخَطَبَهَا أَبُو الْجَهْمِ بْنُ حُذَيْفَةَ وَمِنْ بَعْدِهِ مُعَاوِيَةُ بَعْدَ انْقِضَاءِ الْعِدَّةِ فَاسْتَشَارَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «أَمَا أَبُو جَهْمٍ فَضَرُوبٌ لِلنِّسَاءِ وَأَمَّا مُعَاوِيَةُ فَمُمَلَّقٌ يَعْنِي مُفْلِسَ لَا يَمْلِكُ شَيْئًا وَلَكِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتِ عَنْ أُسَامَةَ؟» قُلْتُ أَنْكِحُ أُسَامَةَ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمِ انْكِحِي أُسَامَةَ»

✧ "I asked Fatimah bt. Qays how her affair had been. She said: 'My husband divorced me three times all at once, and I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: My in-laws claim that I am entitled to neither housing nor maintenance.' He said: 'They have spoken the truth. Go and observe your waiting period in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum' — and he was blind. She said: 'After my waiting period ended, Abu al-Jahm b. Hudhayfah proposed to her, and after him Mu'awiyah. She consulted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: "As for Abu al-Jahm, he is a beater of women, and as for Mu'awiyah, he is a poor man with no property. But why not Usamah?" I said: "Should I marry Usamah?" He said: "Yes, marry Usamah."'"
