✧ Al-Qaʿnabi narrated to us from Malik; and Bakr b. Sahl narrated to us saying: ʿAbdullah b. Yusuf narrated to us: Malik narrated to us from ʿAbdullah b. Yazid, the freedman of al-Aswad b. Sufyan, from Abu Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Rahman, from Fatimah bint Qays: Abu ʿAmr b. Hafs divorced her irrevocably while he was absent. He sent his agent with barley, and she objected to it. He said, "By God, you have no claim on us for anything." She went to the Messenger of God ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said, "You have no maintenance," and ordered her to observe her waiting period in the house of Umm Sharik. Then he said, "That is a woman whom my companions visit. Observe your waiting period in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum, for he is a blind man; you can put down your garments. When you are free, come to me." When I was free, I mentioned to him that Muʿawiyah b. Abi Sufyan and Abu Jahm b. Hudhayfah had proposed to me. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "As for Abu Jahm, he does not put down his staff from his shoulder; and as for Muʿawiyah, he is destitute with no wealth. Marry Usamah b. Zayd." She said, "I disliked him, but then he said, 'Marry Usamah b. Zayd,' and God put good in him, and I was pleased with him."
