✧ Atikah bt. Abd al-Muttalib, the paternal aunt of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, was living with her brother al-Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib. She saw a vision shortly before Badr and was alarmed. She sent to her brother Abbas that night when she was alarmed and woke from her sleep, saying: I saw a vision and fear destruction for your people. He said: What did you see? She said: I will not tell you until you promise me that you will not mention it, for if they hear it they will harm us and make us hear what we dislike. Abbas promised her. She said: I saw a rider coming on his mount from the upper part of Makkah, shouting at the top of his voice: O treacherous ones, O wicked ones, go forth in two or three nights. Then he entered the mosque on his mount and shouted three shouts in the mosque. Men, women, and children gathered around him and the people were terrified by him with the greatest terror. Then I saw him on the back of the Ka'bah on his mount, and he shouted three shouts: O treacherous ones, O wicked ones, go forth in two or three nights, until he made the people between the two mountains of Makkah hear. Then he went to a great rock, pulled it from its base, and sent it upon the people of Makkah. The rock came with a rumble until when it was at the foot of the mountain, it shattered. I do not know of any house or dwelling in Makkah but that a piece of that rock entered it. I feared that evil would befall your people. Abbas was alarmed by it and left her. At the end of that night he met al-Walid b. Utbah b. Rabi'ah, who was a close friend of al-Abbas. He told him Atikah's vision and ordered him not to mention it to anyone. Al-Walid mentioned it to his father, Utbah mentioned it to his brother Shaybah, and the report circulated until it reached Abu Jahl b. Hisham and spread widely. When morning came, Abbas went out to circumambulate the House. He found Abu Jahl, Utbah b. Rabi'ah, Shaybah b. Rabi'ah, Umayyah b. Khalaf, Zam'ah b. al-Aswad, and Abu al-Bakhtari among a group talking. When they saw Abbas circumambulating the House, Abu Jahl called out: O Abu al-Fadl, when you finish your circumambulation, come to us. When he finished, he came and sat. Abu Jahl said: O Abu al-Fadl, what vision did Atikah see? He said: She saw nothing. He said: Indeed. Is it not enough for you, O Banu Hashim, with the lies of men, that you have come to us with the lies of women? We and you were like two racehorses, competing for glory for a long time. When the knees drew level, you said: Among us is a prophet. Nothing remains but for you to say: Among us is a prophetess. I do not know among Quraysh a household more lying in men or more lying in women than you. They harmed him that day with the severest harm. Abu Jahl said: Atikah claimed that the rider said: go forth in two or three nights. If these three pass, your lying will become clear to Quraysh, and we will write a document and hang it on the Ka'bah that you are the most lying household among the Arabs, man and woman. Is it not enough for you, O Banu Qusayy, that you took the hijabah, the council, the watering, the provision, and the support, until you came to us claiming a prophet from among you? They harmed him that day with the severest harm. Abbas said to him: Gently, O you who dyes his anus, will you stop? Lying is in you and your household. Those present said to him: O Abu al-Fadl, you were not ignorant or senile. Abbas met severe harm from Atikah for spreading her report. When it was the evening of the third night of the nights in which Atikah saw the vision, the rider whom Abu Sufyan had sent, Damdam b. Amr al-Ghifari, came to them and said: O Banu Ghalib, go forth. Muhammad and his companions have set out to intercept Abu Sufyan, so protect your caravan. Quraysh were terrified with the greatest terror and feared Atikah's vision, and they went forth on every difficult and tractable mount.
