حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا يَزِيدُ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ شَهْرَ بْنَ حَوْشَبٍ يَقُولُ حَدَّثَتْنِي أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةُ أَنَّ امْرَأَةً مِنَ النِّسْوَةِ قَالَتْ

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا هَذَا الْمَعْرُوفُ الَّذِي نُهِينَا أَنْ نَعْصِيَكَ فِيهِ؟ قَالَ «لَا تَنُحْنَ» قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَإِنَّ بَنِي فُلَانٍ قَدْ كَانَ أَسْعَدُونِي عَلَى بِنْتِ عَمِّي فُلَانَةٍ فَلَا بُدَّ مِنْ قَضَائِهِمْ فَأَبَى عَلَيَّ فَعَاوَدْتُهُ مِرَارًا فَأَذِنَ لِي فِي قَضَائِهِنَّ فَلَمْ أَنُحْ بَعْدَ قَضَائِهِنَّ وَلَا غَيْرُهُ حَتَّى السَّاعَةِ وَلَمْ يَبْقَ مِنَ النِّسْوَةِ إِلَّا قَدْ نَاحَتْ غَيْرِي

✧ O Messenger of God, what is this good deed that we have been forbidden to disobey you in? He said: “That you do not wail.” I said: “O Messenger of God, the Banu so-and-so helped me mourn my paternal cousin so-and-so, and I must repay them.” He refused me, but I repeated it to him several times, and he permitted me to repay them. After repaying them, I never wailed again, nor did I wail otherwise, up to this very hour. No woman remained but she has wailed, except me.
