حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِ الْبَاقِي الْأَذَنِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ لُوَيْنٌ قَالَا ثنا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي ثَوْرٍ عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ قَالَ
جِيءَ بِمَاعِزٍ رَجُلٍ قَصِيرٍ مُتَّزِرٍ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُتَّكِئًا عَلَى وِسَادَةٍ فَلَمَّا أُتِيَ بِهِ اجْتَنَحَ الْوِسَادَةَ فَكَلَّمَهُ فَاحْمَرَّ وَجْهُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَرَفَ أَنَّهُ قَدْ أَغْضَبَهُ فَأَوْمَأَ بِيَدِهِ أَنِ ارْجُمُوهُ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَ رَجُلًا فِي أَثَرِهِ وَكَلَّمَهُ قَلِيلًا ثُمَّ قَالَ «اذْهَبُوا بِهِ فَارْجُمُوهُ» فَثَارَ الْقَوْمُ فَصَعِدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمِنْبَرَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَمَا بَعْدُ كُلَّمَا نَفَرْنَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ تَخَلَّفَ أَحَدُهُمْ لَهُ نَبِيبٌ كَنَبِيبِ التَّيْسِ يَمْنَحُ إِحْدَاهُنَّ شَيْئًا أَمَا لَئِنْ أَمْكَنَنِي اللهُ مِنْ أَحَدِهِمْ لَأُنَكِّلَنَّ بِهِ»

✧ Ma'iz, a short man wearing a waist-wrapper, was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was reclining on a cushion. When he was brought, he turned aside from the cushion and spoke with him. The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned red, and he knew that he had angered him. So he gestured with his hand: “Stone him.” Then he sent a man after him and spoke with him briefly. Then he said, “Take him away and stone him.” The people rose, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit, praised and extolled Allah, then said: “Now then, whenever we set out in the way of Allah, one of them stays behind and bleats like a billy goat, giving one of them something. Indeed, if Allah gives me power over any of them, I will make an example of him.”
