وَعَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ أَنَّهُ نَزَلَ فِي بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ فِي شَأْنِ مَا صَنَعَ بِهِمْ عَامِلُهُمُ الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنْ جَاءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَأٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا} الْآيَةَ قَالَتْ
وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ إِلَيْهِمْ يَصْدُقُ أَمْوَالَهُمْ فَلَمَّا سَمِعُوا بِهِ أَقْبَلَ رَكْبٌ مِنْهُمْ فَقَالُوا نَسِيرُ مَعَ رَسُولِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْمِلُهُ فَلَمَّا سَمِعَ بِذَلِكَ ظَنَّ أَنَّهُمْ سَارُوا إِلَيْهِ لِيَقْتُلُوهُ فَرَجَعَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ مَنَعُوا صَدَقَاتَهُمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَأَقْبَلَ الْقَوْمُ حَتَّى قَدِمُوا الْمَدِينَةَ ثُمَّ صَفُّوا وَرَاءَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الصَّفِّ فَلَمَّا قَضَى الصَّلَاةَ انْصَرَفُوا فَقَالُوا إِنَّا نَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ غَضَبِ اللهِ وَغَضَبِ رَسُولِهِ سَمِعْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بِرَسُولِكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ يَصْدُقُ أَمْوَالَنَا فَسُرِرْنَا بِذَلِكَ وَقَرَّتْ بِهِ أَعْيُنُنَا وَأَرَدْنَا أَنْ نَلْقَاهُ وَنَسِيرُ مَعَ رَسُولِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَمِعْنَا أَنَّهُ رَجَعَ فَخَشِينَا أَنْ يَكُونَ رَدَّهُ غَضَبٌ مِنَ اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ فَلَمْ يَزَالُوا يَعْتَذِرُونَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ
Translation

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ had sent to them [an agent] to collect the zakah on their wealth. When they heard of him, a mounted group of them set out and said, “We will travel with the messenger of the Messenger of God ﷺ and carry him.” When he heard of that, he thought they were coming to him to kill him, so he returned and said, “Banu al-Mustaliq have withheld their zakah, O Messenger of God.” The people came until they arrived in Madinah, then they stood in rows behind the Messenger of God ﷺ in prayer. When he finished the prayer, they departed and said, “We seek refuge in God from the anger of God and the anger of His Messenger. We heard, O Messenger of God, of your messenger whom you sent to collect the zakah on our wealth, and we were pleased with that and our eyes were comforted by it. We wanted to meet him and travel with the messenger of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Then we heard that he had returned, so we feared that what turned him back was anger from God and His Messenger.” They kept making excuses to the Prophet ﷺ until this verse was revealed.
