✧ The people indeed spoke about this matter and it spread, and the Messenger of Allah stood up as a preacher concerning it, and I was not aware of it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered, along with a group of his companions, upon a Nubian slave girl of mine, and the Messenger of Allah said, “What do you know about Aisha?” She said, “I know of no fault in her except that she sleeps and the sheep enters and eats her dough and her mat.” He said, “I am not asking you about this.” She said, “Then what about?” When she understood, she said, “Glory be to Allah! I know of Aisha only as the goldsmith knows the pure red gold.” Then the Prophet ﷺ went out, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, “Advise me, O assembly of Muslims, concerning a people who have maligned my family, while I have never known any evil in them, and they have maligned them by one who, by Allah, I have never known any evil in, and I have never been absent except that he was with me, and he never entered my house except that I was present.” Sa'd b. Mu'adh said, “I think their necks should be struck.” A man from the Khazraj said, “You have lied, by Allah. By Allah, if they had been from your own clan, you would not have ordered their killing.” Hassan was from the Khazraj, until there was a dispute between the Aws and the Khazraj in the mosque. Among those who spread it were Hassan b. Thabit, Mistah b. Uthathah, and Hamnah bt. Jahsh, along with others. It was spoken about in the presence of Abdullah b. Ubayy, and he would listen to it, encourage it, and spread it. Aisha said: One night I went out with the mother of Mistah for my need, and while we were walking, she stumbled and said, “May Mistah perish.” I said, “Glory be to Allah! Do you curse your son Mistah, who is among the first emigrants and who witnessed Badr?” Then she walked for a while and stumbled again and said the same thing, and I said the same to her. She said, “By Allah, I do not curse him except because of you.” I said, “What is my affair?” She informed me of the matter. Then I went to relieve myself and returned, and I fell ill with fever. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered and said, “What is the matter with you, O Aisha?” I said, “I have a fever; give me permission to go to my parents.” So he permitted me, and I went. My mother was downstairs and my father was on the roof of the house praying. My mother said, “What is the matter with you, O Aisha?” I said, “The mother of Mistah told me such-and-such.” She said, “Have you only now heard of it?” So I wept, and she wept. My father heard the weeping and said, “What is the matter with my daughter?” My mother said, “She has heard of that matter just now.” He said, “O my daughter, return to your house until we come to you tomorrow.” So he came the next day, while there was a woman from the Ansar with the Prophet ﷺ. Her presence did not prevent the Prophet ﷺ from speaking. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, “To proceed: O Aisha, if you have done wrong and erred, then seek forgiveness from Allah and repent.” I said to my father, “Speak.” He said, “With what shall I speak?” I said to my mother, “Speak.” She said, “With what shall I speak?” So I praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, “To proceed: By Allah, if I say to you that I did it — while Allah knows that I did not do it — you would say, ‘She has confessed to what she did not do.’ And if I say that I did not do it — while Allah knows that I did not do it — you would say, ‘She has lied.’ And I find no example for myself and for you except what the righteous servant said: {So patience is most fitting. And Allah is the one sought for help against what you describe}.”
