✧ Utaybah b. Abi Lahab married Umm Kulthum bint Rasul Allah ﷺ but did not consummate the marriage until the Prophet ﷺ was sent. Ruqayyah was with his brother Utbah b. Abi Lahab. When Allah ﷻ sent down {Perish the hands of Abu Lahab}, Abu Lahab said to his two sons Utaybah and Utbah, 'My head is forbidden from your heads if you do not divorce the two daughters of Muhammad.' Their mother, bint Harb b. Umayyah, who is the carrier of firewood, said, 'Divorce them, my sons, for they have become dear to him.' So they divorced them. When Utaybah divorced Umm Kulthum, he came to the Prophet ﷺ after parting from Umm Kulthum and said, 'I disbelieve in your religion and I have parted from your daughter. You do not love me and I do not love you.' Then he attacked him and tore the shirt of the Prophet ﷺ while he was leaving for Syria as a merchant. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, I ask Allah to set His dog upon you.' He went out in a trading party of Quraysh until they stopped at a place in Syria called al-Zarqa at night. A lion surrounded them that night, and Utaybah began to say, 'Woe to my mother! By Allah, it will eat me just as Muhammad prayed against me. Ibn Abi Kabshah made me weep while he is in Makkah and I am in Syria.' The lion came at him from among the people, seized his head, and crushed him with a bite, killing him. Zuhayr b. al-Ala said: Hisham b. Urwah narrated to us from his father that when the lion surrounded them that night, they went away and slept, and Utaybah was placed in their midst. The lion came stepping over until it seized Utaybah's head and crushed him. Uthman b. Affan, may Allah have mercy on him, succeeded after Ruqayyah to Umm Kulthum, ؓ.
